Glass can hit fire ratings too, but it needs specific fire-rated glass and hardware that costs meaningfully more and has to be planned early, not swapped in after the layout’s approved.
Acoustic performance out of the box is another. A standard drywall partition with mineral wool infill in the cavity sits comfortably around STC 40-45 without any special upgrade, whereas glass needs laminated acoustic panels and careful sealing at every junction to get anywhere near that, and even then the ceiling void and floor gap issues that trip up acoustic glass projects (a genuinely common failure point, we’ve written about this separately) don’t apply the same way to a solid stud wall running to slab.
Services routing is the quiet advantage nobody markets. Electrical conduit, data cabling, even plumbing in some layouts, all sit inside the stud cavity without anyone seeing it. Try running the same services through or around a glass partition and you’re either exposing conduit somewhere visible or routing everything through the floor, which adds cost and constrains where switches and outlets can go.
Where Glass Genuinely Beats Drywall

A common middle ground that works well in practice: drywall from floor to about waist or desk height, glass above that up to the ceiling. You get the acoustic and services benefits of drywall in the lower section, plus the light and openness of glass up top. It’s cheaper than full-height glass, performs better acoustically than full glass, and still reads as modern rather than boxed in.
